‘Scene from a horror movie’: camera captures scary storm that caused destruction in SC

A sudden gale caused destruction and panic in Videira, in the Midwest of Santa Catarina, on Friday night (28). The force of the wind hit the company Videplast, located in one of the city’s industrial areas, knocking down part of the external metal structure and causing widespread roof damage. Images from a security camera at a neighboring gas station captured the moment when the gusts took over the region at around 8:50 pm.

In the video, it is possible to see the wind dragging cones, motorbikes and objects across the road as people try to protect themselves. A few seconds later, part of the company’s roof collapses. Internet users described the scene as “a horror movie” and reported that they could barely react.

Employees ran for safety

According to reports sent to Jornal Razão, workers who were close to the site managed to barely escape. “The structure collapsed suddenly. The noise was absurd, it seemed like the ground was shaking”, said a resident of the region.

The Fire Department responded to several simultaneous occurrences of roofing in the Domingos Forlin, Linha Escussiatto, Lino Valentim and Aurelia Testolim Marcon neighborhoods. Several vehicles were called to provide support in different parts of the city.

Possible microexplosion

Experts do not rule out the possibility that the event was caused by an atmospheric microexplosion, a phenomenon characterized by a violent air current that descends from the clouds and hits the ground with concentrated force.

Although there is still no official report from Civil Defense, the localized intensity of the storm and the specific destruction reinforce this hypothesis. The Videira region has a history of extreme weather events, especially during periods of instability associated with cold fronts.
