Film with Wagner Moura and Brazil’s chosen one to try for a spot at the Oscars next year, The Secret Agent hits theaters this Thursday (6). Kleber Mendonça Filho’s new feature film mentions and highlights classics from the 1970s, the period in which the story is set.

The Secret Agent follows professor Marcelo (Wagner Moura), who moves to Recife during Carnival, with the intention of starting his life over. He finds refuge in a community that shelters other persecuted people amid the insecurity of the military dictatorship period.

There are direct references to some films, such as Jaws (1975) and The Prophecy (1976), which are important in the development of the plot. Other titles appear discreetly, on posters and cinema signs – part of the action takes place behind the scenes of a theater in the capital of Pernambuco.

Jaws (1975)
Em Sharka horror classic directed by Steven Spielberg, an attack on bathers is a sign that the small town’s beach has become a dining area for a gigantic white shark, which scares the local population. The film impacted pop culture and launched the concept of the summer blockbuster.

The Prophecy (1976)

Considered a “cursed” film, due to tragic behind-the-scenes episodes, The Prophecy It shows a couple who really want to have children. When she gives birth to a stillborn baby, the husband adopts a child without telling his wife. What he doesn’t know is that the baby is the antichrist.

King Kong (1976)

There are several versions of King Kongbut the one mentioned in the Brazilian film is the one with Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange. An expedition searching for oil comes across a giant gorilla on a prehistoric island in the Pacific and decides to capture it to make money by exhibiting it in New York, terrorizing the city.
The film is not available on streaming in Brazil, but it is possible to find different versions, such as the 2005 one.
Carrie the Stranger (1976)

Directed by Brian de Palma and based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King, Carrie the Star is about a teenager (Sissy Spacek) who faces insults from her classmates at school and abuse at home from her mother, a religious fanatic. Supernatural events surrounding the protagonist begin to emerge on the eve of the school dance.

Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands (1976)

Inspired by the novel by Jorge Amado and directed by Bruno Barreto, Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands features Sônia Braga as the protagonist, torn between the ghost of Vadinho (José Wilker), her late husband and exemplary lover, and Teodoro (Mauro Mendonça), who gives her a peaceful but tedious life.

The Magnificent (1973)

French-Italian film, The Magnificent is a comedy by Philippe de Broca. French writer François Merlin (Jean-Paul Belmondo) is an author of spy novels who creates his characters from people in his everyday life.

Pasqualino Seven Beauties (1975)

Italian film directed by Lina Wertmüller, Pasqualino Seven Beauties tells the story of a man who deserts the army in World War II, is captured by the Germans and sent to a concentration camp. There, he remembers his family, his seven sisters and the conflicting stories shown in flashbacks.
