Singers and directors reveal to VEJA the behind-the-scenes of ‘K-pop Warriors’
In her first film as a director, Maggie Kang I wanted to participate in a project where she could be authentic and have her ideas taken seriously. Said and done: In K-pop warriors, the debutant director created a story that mixed K-pop groups and their Korean origins, represented by a mythology that involves demons and a magical protective barrier called Honmoon. The film quickly became a hit on Netflix: just over two months after its debut on the platform, the animation crowned its unbridled worldwide success and officially became the most watched film in the service’s history, with more than 300 million views.
The musical success was also bombastic. The original track, composed by multiple South Korean talents, scored hits on the streaming charts and even on the Hot 100, the most competitive pop music chart in the United States. In this part, singers Ejae, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami participated. The former had an extensive career as a lyrist of K-pop songs, and Audrey and Rei were known in a more alternative Korean music scene. Recommended by Ejae, who knew them by name, the three entered the studios and worked on the compositions of HUNTR/X, the fictional group in the film, and soon became, themselves, a real k-pop group: on Spotify, HUNTR/X is the 48th most listened to artist and already has 52 million monthly listeners. For comparison, globally known groups such as BTS and KATSEYE have 25 million and 32 million respectively.
