The Chevrolet Silverado beats the world record for autonomy in Ve
The truck itself has an estimated autonomy of 493 miles (793 km) of the factory, but GM engineers set a challenge to go further. The hardware and vehicle software did not touch; Instead, the test drivers were asked to change their habits together with a series of configuration settings.
The changes made included an average speed of 20-25 mph, minimize sudden braking and accelerations and disconnect the air conditioner. In addition, the truck did not carry passengers during most of the test, the spare wheel was removed, the wheel alignment was optimized, a tonneau accessing cover was added to increase the air flow and the arms of the windshield wiper were placed in its lowest position. Next, GM engineers led the truck in one hour shifts along public roads near Milford Proving Ground of GM, in southeast Michigan.
Kurt Kelty, vice president of batteries, propulsion and sustainability of GM, said: “To achieve this type of autonomy with a complete load does not happen by accident. It requires a deep integration of the chemistry of the batteries, the efficiency of the motor units, the software and the engineering of the vehicle, and that is exactly what the team has achieved. This achievement is a great example of how far our technology has come Type of innovation on which we rely every day on GM. “
In a statement, GM added: “The team discovered that the most efficient cruise speed of Silverado EV was 20-25 mph; a realistic rhythm for driving by neighborhoods or cities in southeast Michigan. At that speed, the truck used almost all the energy of its battery to move along the road, with a minimum of energy destined for other uses.”
At the end of the test, the engineers recharged the winning vehicle and used it to feed a 3D printer that later printed a commemorative trophy of the record. The previous record of 1,205.4 km (749 miles) was established by Lucid earlier this summer.
