“The Conjuring” can pack a punch: One of the most exciting films of the last ten years is appearing for the first time on DVD & Blu-ray – FINALLY! – Cinema News

Despite the hype, the “Conjuring” saga was never really able to get under the skin of FILMSTARTS editor Daniel Fabian – in complete contrast to that intense insider tip that is finally celebrating its home cinema premiere after years of waiting.

Horror is like humor: there’s no arguing about taste. Some go for rampant carnage, others for chills that creep under the skin, some like to use supernatural horror fairy tales to push the boundaries of the imaginable, and for many the greatest horror lies in the tangible horror that could overtake any of us. FILMSTARTS editor Daniel Fabian can gain something from all of these sections – although playing with human fears always gets to him in particular…

… in a wide variety of variations – from the claustrophobic cave horror “The Descent” to the fear of heights spectacle “Fall – Fear Reaches New Heights”, from the trapped-in-a-coffin thriller “Buried” to the anti-beach holiday classic “Jaws”. Are you similar? Then we have a tip for you: Hush – Still“ is a prime example of minimalist, effective suspense cinema – directed by Mike Flanaganwhich has recently become one of THE beacons of hope in modern horror cinema with series and films such as “The Haunting of Hill House” and “Doctor Sleeps Awakening”.

After the nine-year-old film was initially released exclusively via Netflix in Germany in 2018, it has now disappeared from the streaming platform again. Soon you’ll finally be able to add the film to your collection – in such a way that no one can easily take it away from you again. Because “Hush – Still” will be released for the first time on November 28, 2025, just in time for Halloween DVD*, Blu-ray* and 4K Blu-ray:

Lighthouse Home Entertainment brings us the physical premiere, which will also bring another novelty. Because On board will not only be the well-known version, but also the so-called “Shush Cut” for the first time.which is the black and white version of the film – which makes “Still” even more stripped down (and perhaps more effective?) than ever before.

“Hush – Still”: 80 minutes of high tension!

While the “Conjuring” films mentioned at the beginning have always been simply too clumsy and “over-staged” for me to be even interested in the fate of the families involved and the tension never gets too far above zero for me, “Still” is an absolute lesson in visual storytelling. Mike Flanagan and his wife and leading actress Kate Siegel laid the foundation for their almost uniquely exciting home invasion thriller much earlier. And with the script.

Just as in “John Wick” it is enough to take the title hero’s dog and car to get the story going, Flanagan and Siegel always keep it simple. With an author working on her new work in a secluded cabin in the forest, they honestly even roll down long-trodden genre paths more flatly than they already are. However, the fact that the protagonist is deaf and mute – and does not notice for a long time that an intruder is dangerously approaching – is enough to gradually tighten the tension corset until you hardly have any room to breathe.

As soon as the attacker is in the picture for the first time, you root for the writer played by Siegel – and don’t just keep your fingers crossed for her in the looming battle that she can actually only lose. Above all you put yourself in their hopeless situation and desperately look for ways and means that might help you escape. It is all the more pleasing that Flanagan refrains from hitting unnecessary hooks with his story. On the one hand, the running time is reduced to just under 80 minutes and on the other hand, the audience is not given a breather – until the end credits roll and they can FINALLY take a deep breath.

Yes, at the end you feel almost as exhausted from all the tension as if you had just been in the gym. However, you’ll get your ass off the sofa at the latest when you’re suddenly no longer entirely sure whether you’ve actually locked the front door…

While “Hush” didn’t make quite as big a splash as Flanagan’s other works (most recently the famous Stephen King adaptation “The Life Of Chuck”), the “Conjuring” franchise still enjoys enormous popularity. This is also underlined by the plans for the next chapter within the gigantic horror universe:

Shocker about ancient curse continues after 6 (!) years: The most successful horror universe of all time continues to grow after “Conjuring 4”.
