The documentary produced by Jordi Évole with which Eduardo Casanova makes his HIV profitable
«Today I break this unpleasant and painful silence after many years. A silence that many people with HIV keep and suffer from.” With these words, he began Eduardo Casanova a statement in which he announced that he suffered from the aforementioned disease through social networks. «I do it when I want, when I can. I’m doing it for me, but I wish this could help more people. “I do it my way, through cinema, which is my way of communicating,” defended the 34-year-old filmmaker.
«But, above all, I do it with dignity. Dignity should be the way in which all people with HIV can come out of the closet. (About 80% of people with HIV have not shared with almost anyone that they have the infection, due to a stigma that condemns us to systematic and most unfair rejection in the world),” noted the film director.
Now we know that the disease has been, in part, the inspiration for his latest series, the woke Silencea black comedy where a family of vampires lives in centuries marked by plague and AIDS. The director’s intention was to denounce with “humor and hooliganism” throughout three chapters, that the stigma “around HIV and the fear of retaliation for “exposing your own voice” persist as forms of “structural violence by the system.”
It will not be the only audiovisual project that has inspired him, since he has decided to tell in detail his journey with the disease through a documentary that he has already recorded and that will be released in theaters next 2026.
It is carried out by Atresmedia y El Barrio Productionscreators of other formats such as Saved, About Évole, Anatomy of… and other documentaries like Astral, Operation Palace o What you give me. To direct this new feature film they have had Marius Sánchez (Don’t call me Veal) y Louis Galter aims to offer a social and cultural look at the virus, relying on personal testimonies and an audiovisual language strongly marked by the director’s personal seal.
Eduardo Casanova, in the teaser of his documentary
«After half a life in silence, Eduardo decides to tell it publicly. But, first, you need to talk about it with some of the people who have accompanied you during these years: your doctor, your nurse, your closest collaborators, your friends,” explains Atresmedia in its statement. “It was filmed this fall and shows a cathartic journey with humor, emotion, memory and cinema, which allows us to understand the reality of people with HIV today and to better understand who Eduardo Casanova is,” he adds.
«In your last film I have seen some experiences that I believe are yours. If one day you feel like making a documentary about your life, I would like to do it with you,” he says. Jordi Évole at a press conference in the first teaser that has been made known from the documentary. “The truth is that I have no desire to make a documentary about my life,” Casanova responds in his characteristic ironic style while laughing.
“Everyone has told me not to do this,” he explains later, being honest and admitting that he does it because it is unbearable. «I can’t take it anymore, I don’t want to live like this. To tell it is to seek help. Only a minute in advance, but it already anticipates what we can expect from it: personal testimonies, visits to the doctor and a beginning that will cause as much talk as its director: “I would love for the documentary to start like this, with a pink woman… It’s a prison, everything is a metaphor (…) What if I get up and say I have HIV?”
