the film that with humor makes us empathize with a true story
A Good Thief, directed by Derek Cianfrance, tells the surprising true story of Jeffrey Manchester, a former Marine known as “Roofman” for his peculiar way of stealing: he entered the premises by drilling their ceilings during the night. Far from limiting itself to telling a police incident, the film explores themes such as guilt, redemption, identity and the possibility of rebuilding a life.
The film begins with one of the protagonist’s most famous robberies. Manchester is captured, sentenced to prison and, four years later, manages to escape.
From that moment on, the story changes tone: he hides in an abandoned toy store, where he manages to go unnoticed for months thanks to his ingenuity. Is there where he meets Leigh (Kirsten Dunst), a divorced motherwho works there. The relationship that arises between them triggers the central conflict: his desire for a normal life collides with the reality of being a fugitive.

Cianfrance returns to the intimate style that made him recognized in Blue Valentine (2010): close camera, expressive silences and emotionally complex characters.
Here, in addition, he uses Jeffrey himself as a narrator, which allows access to his thoughts, fears and reflections. This narrative decision humanizes the character and generates empathy, without justifying his crimes, but explaining his motivations and his need for redemption.
One of the film’s successes is the balance between tones: it combines drama, romance, thriller and moments of humor that appear just when the tension allows it.

The toy store scene becomes a symbolic space of refuge, reinvention and contradiction: a childish and bright place that contrasts with the clandestine life of the protagonist. In this scenario, a discreet criticism of the media is also introduced, by showing how news about crimes impacts only momentarily and is quickly forgotten.
Channing Tatum offers a surprising performance, showing a vulnerable, clumsy and charismatic character, who oscillates between wit and fragility. Kirsten Dunst brings sensitivity and authenticity to her role, and the two build a credible chemistry between them. Although supporting actors like Peter Dinklage or LaKeith Stanfield do not have as much development, the cast as a whole solidly supports the story.
Towards the end, the film may lose some intensity, but it maintains its emotional coherence: it does not glorify the criminal, but rather shows an imperfect man seeking change. Cianfrance turns a real police case into a human story about second chances.
A Good Thief is a captivating, emotional and original film, capable of mixing the absurdity of reality with tenderness and tension, without losing sight of its heart: the fight to be forgiven and start over.
