the first reviews are catastrophic
We believed in it (perhaps we believed in it a little too much), and the result risks hurting. But, at the same time, we wanted to believe it. As soon as the first trailers were published in November, then last December, the film Return To Silent Hill was announced promising et extremely faithful at the game Silent Hill 2. We clearly felt the lack of budgets, despite that, the universe adapted by Christophe Gans who had achieved a great feat with the first film Silent Hill in 2006, seemed, once in a while, to be very well transcribed.
Alas, while the film will be released in theaters on February 4the first notices arrived on the Internet and it’s a real disaster.
9% positive review for Return To Silent Hill
The first reviews of Return To Silent Hill arrived yesterday and it’s a disaster. Only 6% positive reviews with the top 18 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. A day later, when the number of reviews now stands at 23, the rating climbs slightly to reach the 9% of positive opinions. Which makes it, for the moment, the worst film of the year. On MetaCritic, the film manages to do a little better with 26% positive reviews with nine reviews.
Obviously, among the main criticisms, we can note the fact that the direction of the actors seems not to be under control. So the acting is not good. And finally, the adaptation is also not successful. The film would ultimately not be not that faithful to the gamewith a plot freely adapted which goes in all directions and which, as a result, loses the essence and impact of the game.
It is therefore clearly not a success for this Return To Silent Hill who risks not meeting the expected success. As a reminder, the first film Silent Hill in 2006, also directed by Christophe Gans, didn’t really fare any better. To date, it totals a rating of 34% on Rotten Tomatoes and a rating of 31% on MetaCritic. At the time, it was especially the artistic direction that was praised. As for the rest, it was still not up to par.
