The Red Command, the criminal group that the Brazilian police tried to dismantle in an operation (which ended with 132 deaths) | The COUNTRY Express
On Tuesday, Rio de Janeiro was the scene of the bloodiest police operation in Brazilian history, with 132 dead in the Penha and Alemão favelas.
What were the police looking for? The operation was directed against the Comando Vermelho (CV) and its main leader at large, Edgar Alves Andrade, accused of numerous murders. However, the boss managed to escape.
What is the Red Command? He was born in 1979 in a Brazilian prison, the result of an alliance between common prisoners and politicians during the military dictatorship.
- This union gave rise to a criminal organization that went from bank robbery to international drug and weapons trafficking.
- It currently has about 30,000 members and a presence in almost all of Brazil.
The CV imposes its law in the favelas through terror. Although today it occupies second place behind another rival group, the First Capital Command, it remains the most violent and defiant faction against the Brazilian State.
