The Swiss film The last round (heroine2025), by Swiss-German director Petra Volpe, has entered the shortlist of the 15 best international films nominated for the next Oscars. The Academy announced this on Wednesday.
The last round is an engaging drama set in the understaffed surgery department of a Swiss hospital. The film had its world premiere last February at the Berlinale. With over 600,000 spectators, the Swiss-German production achieved significant success in German-speaking cinemas. Petra Volpe had already been in the running for an Oscar with the feature film The divine order (The divine order), from 2017.
The list announced Wednesday on the Academy’s website includes: Belén (Argentina), The Secret Agent (Brazil), An incident example of Iranian Jaraf Panahi candidate of France, Sound of Falling (Germania), That’s it (Japan), All That’s Left of You (Jordan), Homebound (India), The President’s Cake (Iraq), Sentimental Value (Norway), Palestine 36 (Palestine), No Other Choice (South Korea), Sirât (Spain), The Voice of Hind Rajab (Tunisia) e Left-Handed Girl (Taiwan).
The announcement of the final nominations (the five films nominated to compete for the prestigious award) is scheduled for January 22, 2026. The Oscar award ceremony at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles will instead have to wait until March 15, 2026.
