two great sagas return on the same day
The Avengers have been facing some of the most powerful entities on Earth since 2012. Marvel’s superhero saga has become a cultural icon, expanding an entire universe that has been in operation since then for more than a decade. After a series of hesitation, hopes are pinned on next year, with the premiere of his new event film that promises to change everything.
We have not seen the appearance of his most surprising opponent to date, who may be off screen and who is none other than Lisan al-Gaib. It will be the day December 18 when Avengers Doomsday and ‘Dune Part 3’ clash at the box office.
Lots of hype, but few details
At the moment we know very little about these films. Doomsday has given us its almost complete cast and very brief clues about the possibility that its plot involves a confrontation with Fox’s classic X-Men. From Dune at least we have the original material to base it on, a second book titled ‘The Messiah of Dune’ to which Villeneuve will surely adhere religiously again. Outside of that, we would expect the return of the entire established cast, with the added rumors of high-level additions like Robert Pattinson.

But who has thrown down the gauntlet to whom? It was Dune that ranked first on that date, with the first reports as early as the summer of 2024. Marvel, for its part, delayed the date of the new Avengers this May, placing it specifically on that day. There are reasonable doubts about whether the battle will happen at all, since it is easy for one of the two to back down in the remaining months, but there are also reasons to think that neither will budge. Dune, in particular, has a close relationship with the IMAX format, which gives it a tighter margin of movement with the dates by having to coordinate with the available screens.
And who has the best chance of winning? Well, if we look at the numbers, Dune has been one of the great heavyweights of recent years, with the last one grossing $715 million and remaining one of the highest-grossing films of its year. The Avengers, for their part, are perhaps the most formidable opponent that can be faced. ‘Endgame’ made more than 2 billion at the box office and today remains the second highest-grossing film in history after ‘Avatar’. It remains to be seen whether the new installment manages to raise that interest, since the MCU is going through a period of disenchantment on the part of fans and non-fans.
