Understand how the musical film connects with The Wizard of Oz
Success on Broadway for over two decades, Wicked has now also conquered cinemas through the film adaptation directed by Jobs Men – the second part of which is currently showing in cinemas.
Released in 2003, the theatrical production that inspired both films is based on the novel Maligna: The Untold Story of the Witches of Ozwritten in 1995 by Gregory Maguire – and which, in turn, was derived from the narrative of The Magic of Oza 1900 children’s book brought to the big screen in 1939, in the anthological film starring Judy Garland.

Wicked is intended to be a prequel to The Magic of Ozby showing how its protagonists, the young Glinda (Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), followed the paths that would lead them to become respectively the Good Witch of the North and the Wicked Witch of the West – played by Billie Burke e Margaret Hamilton in the feature film shot almost a century ago.
Most of the narrative of Wicked focuses, therefore, before the events of The Magic of Oz. There is, however, a period of intersection between the two stories, when the final events of one occur almost simultaneously with the central axis of the other.
