Walker’s “resurrection” is also a financial obstacle, since the visual effects necessary to recreate his features are considered expensive, and do not always produce satisfactory results.

Finally, it is worth remembering that the first three films in the franchise, released between 2001 and 2006, precisely those that focus on street racing culture, were the ones that grossed the least at the box office. Since then, “The Fast and the Furious” has started to focus on robbery and espionage plots, featuring increasingly mind-boggling action scenes.

The change in the global film market was also taken into consideration. In addition to losing the Russian market after the country closed down with the start of the conflict with Ukraine, the East Asian market, once a gold mine for big franchises, started to give more space to local films.

Meanwhile, audiences in the West have shown fatigue toward big franchises, with even once-billion-dollar superhero films having trouble achieving lucrative box office grosses of $700 million. The highest-grossing film of its kind in 2025, “Superman”, for example, closed its season in cinemas worldwide with a gross of US$615 million.

These details, for now, have prevented the new “Fast and Furious” from receiving the green light at Universal. The film has already had three release dates announced – April 2025, sometime in 2026 and, finally, April 2027 – but is no longer registered on the studio’s release calendar.
