Vanessa Paradis, Laurent Lafitte and François Damiens sad fifty-somethings at Jérôme Commandeur

Three high school friends organize a “friends from before” party even though their entire class hated them… Stuck in a bad compromise between acid satire and benevolent buddy filmthis comedy seems sour because it is not really mean.

The summary

Reims, 1993. A high school party at Marion’s ends in fire. Daniel is held responsible. Thirty years later, he died suddenly. The first to be notified are his three old friends: Hervé, a nerdy singer; Maxime, an embittered lawyer, who feels in competition with both his son and his wife; and finally, the very nice Jordy…

What we think

What happened to the assholes from high school? What happened to the arrogant petty bourgeois and the most handsome of the lower class, who were promised a violent return to earth after confronting real life? This is the subject that Jérôme Commandeur intends to address in this new feature film. A rather funny subject at first glance, but one that he doesn’t necessarily approach in the best way.

Indeed, despite its vengeful starting point, You haven’t changed opts for the codes of an ordinary “buddy film”by making the characters he intends to celebrate the heroes of his story. We therefore take our marks in a structure which invites a form of empathy, but we find ourselves on board with worthless, despicable characters who are saddled with heartbreaking lives. What’s more, no one around them can boast of having been treated better by life.

The film is therefore only a catalog of distressing destiniesand therefore, it should – without any other possible choice – be a flamethrower satire, unabashedly pressing on the mushroom of nastiness. However, he doesn’t go there, and we feel him completely striving towards a finale where everyone will have finally forgiven and asked for forgiveness, matured and taken charge of their lives, and where everyone will be able to kiss everyone.

Moreover, casting-wise, the leading trio does not stand out through its obviousness. There is, of course, not much to criticize Laurent Lafitte and François Damiens, who honestly perform their usual number. However, they feel more like they are there because they are everywhere, rather than because of any natural chemistry between them and their character. There remain a few effective gags and a pretty cute Paradise/Commander tandem. It’s not much.
