Weaver Wants A “Galaxy Quest” Director’s Cut

Out doing promotional interviews for “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” the legend that is Sigourney Weaver recently revealed there’s one film on her resume that she would love to see a new director’s cut of.

Appearing in a career retrospective video for Vanity Fair, Weaver revealed that she wishes to see a director’s cut of the celebrated 1999 sci-fi parody “Galaxy Quest”.

The original is a “Star Trek” parody in which the cast of an old, cancelled sci-fi show about a starship crew are abducted by aliens. These aliens have mistaken it for a documentary of real events and seek the actor’s help. Weaver, Tim Allen, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, and Sam Rockwell starred.

The film originally received an R rating before being recut down to a family friendly PG – resulting in several cut scenes and dubbed lines. Weaver hopes to see that original darker version:

“I wish they’d put out a director’s cut of the movie. At the last minute, DreamWorks decided to release the movie without some of the more sophisticated scenes that (Tim) Allen was in. Because it needed a kids movie to go up against Stuart Little. Why don’t they put out the movie again with (Allen) very, very strange and wonderful scenes?”

She calls the film a “love letter to actors” and said the film’s co-writer Robert Gordon had a script ready for a sequel:

“I remember Bob Godon had written a second one. He wouldn’t give it to DreamWorks because he just felt that they had missed the boat. So, we always meant to do a sequel, and then with Alan (Rickman) passing away, we just lost heart.”

Just over a quarter century on, Weaver admits she felt “privileged” to work on the film and how her character Gwen DeMarco was much closer to her than Ripley. “Avatar: Fire and Ash” is out now, “Galaxy Quest” is on VOD, AMC+ & Binge.
