The filmmaker Cyrus Nowrasteh was chosen to command Dark Horsethe biographical film about Jair Bolsonaro, scheduled for 2026. Born in Colorado, in the United States, the director built his career with productions with strong appeal religious e politicalwhich helps explain his interest in the narrative involving the former Brazilian president.
Nowrasteh gained international prominence with titles such as The Stoning of Soraya M. (2008)a drama based on real events that exposes violence against women in Iran; The Young Messiah (2016)which reimagines the childhood of Jesus Christ; and International Kidnapping (2019)suspense starring Jim Caviezel, the same person who will play Bolsonaro in the new film.
Discreet about the project, Nowrasteh has not publicly commented on the details of the filming. Recently, however, he responded to a follower on X saying that he is “recording in Latin America”. In May, he also published records of a trip to location search on the border between Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais.
The director's connection with Brazil is not recent. In the 1990s, he was a screenwriter for the film Jenipapo (1995)directed by Monique Gardenberg and starring Henry Czerny, Júlia Lemmertz, Marília Pêra and Otávio August, one of Nowrasteh's first works linked to the country.
With a background marked by productions of a historical and religious nature, the director now takes on the challenge of portraying one of the most polarizing figures in Brazilian politics.
