Weekend box office: Kaamelott close to the holy grail?

The second part of Arthur Pendragon’s “Astieran” adventures finishes at the top of a ranking reinvigorated by the holidays… but which does not dazzle all the same.

366,000 tickets sold for Kaamelott – Second part (part 1)which brings its cumulative number to 452,000 with previews (AP). SND’s new release also obtains an average of 30 entries per session (e/s), with the third largest combination for a French novelty in 2025 (12,000 sessions), after Chien 51 (12,800 sessions) and God Save the Tuche (14,300 sessions). This second part, however, is a step back compared to the first, released in 2021 – the day the health pass was introduced –, which had garnered 529,000 admissions outside AP for 37 e/s. As for recent major French offers, D’Artagnan et Miladythe two parts of Three Musketeersboth had a superior first weekend, with respectively 602,000 entries for 43 e/s and 535,000 entries for 42 e/s.

Overall, the four new releases in the top 10 have 732,000 entries for 29,700 screenings, representing a share of 41% and 42% respectively. The Little Last achieves the best performance at the session with 33 e/s, for 112,000 entries (134,000 with AP). Hafsia Herzi’s third feature film, under the Ad Vitam banner, obtains the second best average for a Cannes Competition release in 2025, behind the 35 fps of A simple accident. Last year, around this time, The Story of Souleymane ended its first weekend with 84,000 entries for 30 e/s.

With 22 I/O, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze’s Arc attracted 141,000 spectators. If it does not reach 229,000 entries for 34 I/O of Jujutsu Kaisen 0it easily exceeds the 48,000 tickets for 16 e/s of Blue Lock the Movie – Nagi Episode. Latest novelty in the ranking, The Shrinking Man does not rise to the level of its competitors. Jan Kounen’s new production garners 111,000 admissions for 14 e/s; a result lower than the 168,000 spectators for 24 e/s of the Animal Kingdom.

Holidays oblige, the continuations of the top 10 are in very good shape with an average increase of 90%, including 180% for films for young audiences. Hopper and the secret of the groundhog achieved an impressive breakthrough of 243% and recorded 223,000 tickets for 30 e/s, accumulating 406,000 entries. Rebound also important for Super Grand Prix with 106,000 tickets (+208%) and a total of 269,000, as well as for Gabby and the Magic House – The movie with 134,000 tickets (+91%) and a total of 427,000 entries. Last year at the same time, Croquette the wonderful cat delighted 155,000 spectators for 33 e/s, for a total of 304,000 entries.

Also on the rise, It was better tomorrow continues its successful career with 163,000 additional tickets (+27%) and a cumulative total of 582,000. Another comedy distributed by UGC, Never without my therapist accumulated 470,000 tickets after three weekends, before ending his career with more than 700,000. More contrasting results for Chien 51 which sells 290,000 tickets for 25 e/s. With a cumulative total of 715,000 admissions after two weekends, Cédric Jimenez’s new production is currently lagging behind November (953,000 entries) and North Bac (788,000), the filmmaker’s two previous films. For his part, One battle after another is still not running out of steam with 119,000 new entries (-19%) despite a drop in its sessions of 41%. Paul Thomas Anderson’s film obtained an average of 29 fps, the third best for a film in 5th week this year, after the 32 fps of Conclave and the 30 i/s of F1. Furthermore, with 1.28 million admissions, it became the biggest art house success of the year, ahead of another Warner film, Mickey 17.

Note, outside of the ranking, the very good opening weekend of Arcothe animation distributed by Diaphana, Cristal du feature film in Annecy. It sells 95,000 tickets for 30 e/s, a result perfectly equal to Flowreleased around the same time last year. Also, Sacred heart continues to work miracles with 53,000 entries (+6%) for 40 e/s, and a cumulative total of 248,000 tickets.

In total, the top 10 weekend totaled 1.77 million entries, a clear increase of 55.9% compared to last week. However, this is a significant decline compared to the 1.89 million recorded in the same period of 2022 (-6.3%), 35% compared to 2023 (2.74 million) and 31.9% compared to 2024 (2.6 million). The lack of engine is once again weighing on attendance, where no film in the top 10 exceeds 33 fps (compared to 3 in 2024 and 5 in 2024).
