With “Kaamelott: second part”, Alexandre Astier pushes the limits of his universe

The cult saga “Kaamelott” returns to the cinema with a second part in two parts, the first of which was released on October 22. An epic and ambitious film, according to its creator Alexandre Astier.

After having driven his enemy Lancelot from the throne, Arthur Pendragon, worn out by the throes of power and political struggles, is pursued by the anger of the gods. He decides to gather his knights around the new Round Table, to send them on adventures to the four corners of the world to prove their worth.

Four years ago, the first part of “Kaamelott” divided fans. This second part is intended to be more adventurous, promises its director Alexandre Astier. And the one who also plays King Arthur on screen adds: “The story of ‘Kaamelott’ takes place in a fantastic medieval world, in which almost everything that is possible happens.”

Exhausting filming

The filming of the two parts of the film took place over eight months in different locations, from Iceland to Malta, via France and even in a submarine, for a budget of 38 million euros.

“It was still very trying, I don’t know if I would do something this long again,” confides Alexandre Astier who, as usual, took care of the editing of the film, the soundtrack and only put the final touches to this first part a week before its release.

A prestigious and family cast

Among the gallery of some seventy characters in the film, we find prestigious names including Alain Chabat, Guillaume Gallienne, Audrey Fleurot and Clovis Cornillac, already present in the first part, joined by newcomers Virginie Ledoyen and the comedians Haroun and Thomas VDB.

On the other hand, one of the pillars of the story, Perceval, the central personality of “Kaamelott” much appreciated by fans for his clumsiness and his naivety, is no longer there. Actor Franck Pitiot refused to come back.

Alexandre Astier also likes working with family since his two parents, Lionnel Astier and Joëlle Sévilla, are involved in the saga, as are four of their seven children. In the 7:30 p.m. of October 21, the director also admits to having been inspired by his family’s daily life for the scenario: “Once, my son had a fight with his brother. He showed up saying ‘Can I kill Ethan in ‘Kaamelott’?’ And I said to myself ‘that’s not stupid, actually'”.
