Zootopia 2 becomes the 4th biggest box office debut of all time and leads among animations

In a difficult year for Hollywood animations in cinemas, Zootopia 2 surprises by reaching 556 million dollars in worldwide box office in its debut. The record makes the sequel to the 2016 film surpass the resounding record of Ne Zha 2 and become the biggest debut for an animated film of all time, in addition to entering the top 5 biggest box office debuts in history.

In 2025, most of the animations released in theaters failed at the box office, as was the case with Elio, which grossed just 35 million dollars in its global debut. Ne Zha 2 was the only one that stood out, breaking records with impressive numbers since its debut, which reached 432 million in worldwide box office. It is important to emphasize that we are talking about cinema releases, considering that K-Pop Warriors debuted on streaming and is considered one of the biggest hits of the year.

China as a thermometer for box office hits

Zootopia 2 was very well received in China and broke records in the country, consolidating itself as the first Hollywood film to surpass 100 million dollars in a single day, surpassing Avengers: Endgame. In total, of the 556 million dollars in worldwide box office receipts at its debut, 272 million were raised in China alone. The news made the world keep an eye on the total value that would be achieved by Disney animation.

For comparison, the film surpassed the global box office of Wicked: For Good ($393 million) and Fantastic Four: First Steps ($521 million) in its opening weekend alone.

Zootopia is available on Disney+ and its sequel is showing in Brazilian cinemas.
