Zootopia 2 breaks records and is already one of the biggest box office films of the year

Released in Brazilian cinemas on November 27th, Zootopia 2 didn’t take long to prove that the public was really looking forward to a sequel to the series. Released 9 years after the premiere of the original animation, the sequel is making history and breaking several box office records around the world.

According to Variety, the feature film debuted making US$156 million in the United States and US$400 million in the international market — for a total of US$556 million. As a result, it can now be considered the best global release in history for an animated film.

Zootopia 2 debuts breaking records

With these numbers, Zootopia 2 also established itself as the fourth best grossing debut in the entire history of cinema. It just doesn’t surpass the initial performance of other major blockbusters, such as Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War and Spider-Man: No Return Home — all of them linked to Disney, the same company behind the new animation.

  • With the performance, the new film appears to be on track to at least match the commercial performance of its predecessor;
  • Released in 2016, the first Zootopia ended its run in theaters with UIS$341 million in domestic box office and US$684 million in global box office — for a total of more than US$1 billion;
  • According to Disney, the performance of the sequence shows both the appeal of its story and the talent of the teams responsible;
  • “It’s a proud moment for Disney Animation and all of us at Disney, not to mention a great way to kick off the holiday season,” explained Alan Bergman, president of Disney Entertainment.

Zootopia 2’s excellent numbers contrast with 2025, which will be marked by lower-than-expected box office sales for most of its releases. For Disney, it should also help offset lower-than-forecast numbers for titles like Fantastic Four: First Steps, Elio and Tron: Ares.

Zootopia 2 is also a critical success

Among the elements that help explain the great initial success of Zootopia 2 is the fact that the animation seems to make up for all the wait for fans. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 91% approval rating from specialized critics.a rate that reaches 95% when the audience’s impressions are considered.

The New York Times states that the animation appears a little bloated compared to its predecessor, but it makes up for this by being ambitious and action-packed. The San Francisco Chronicles praised the film for venturing into new themes, but without losing its emotional anchor.

“It shows how trust and cooperation often depend on small, courageous choices that are made over and over again,” the outlet states. Among those who did not approve of the film, the main criticisms are directed precisely at its apparent lack of focus and “excessive noise”.
