Zootopia 2 directors don’t rule out possible romance between Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde

Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are great partners in Zootopia, as different as they are. A rabbit and a fox may not work out at first glance, but that doesn’t mean that fans of Disney’s animal franchise can’t hope that the police partners are something more — and maybe that could happen.

After the premiere of the first Zootopia in 2016, fans were hoping that a possible romance could emerge between the two in the sequel that recently debuted in theaters. This, added to the fact that the film has several social comments in its plot, could give more history to the franchise.

“I think it’s just undeniable chemistry, however you want to interpret it. It’s great because it means people loved them in the first movie,” the film’s directors, Byron Howard and Rich Moore, told Entertainment Weekly.

The Zootopia 2 trailer revealed that the two end up having problems in their partnership, precisely because they think very differently from each other, and end up being part of a “partners in crisis” program, something that could have been interpreted as couples therapy for fans of the characters. However, the film reinforces that the two are just friends after all.

“Because this film takes place literally a few weeks after the events of the first film, we get to see this chemistry, this conflict and this fun. This contrast reaches a whole new level, which was great for the film,” added the directors.

In any case, even if there is a chance of romance, Zootopia’s writers would also have to deal with the fact of interspecies relationships and how that would be viewed in this society in a lighthearted and child-friendly way. Whatever Disney decides, the company has not yet confirmed a third film.
