Kate Hudson regretted having rejected being Mary Jane in ‘Spider-Man’: “I don’t like to talk about it”

Kate Hudson revealed that she turned down the role of Mary Jane in the film Spider-Man 2002, a role finally assumed by Kirsten Dunst. During an interview broadcast on December 22, 2025 on the program Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohenthe 46-year-old actress explained the reasons behind her decision and reflected on the impact of that episode on her career.

Asked by Andy Cohen about the rumor, Hudson acknowledged that she avoids addressing the topic because she believes that those who participated in the film were the right people and that the events happen as they should.

He reiterated his discomfort in speaking publicly about job opportunities not taken and reaffirmed his conviction that those who participate in certain projects are the right people, and that each decision represents a turn that is impossible to anticipate.

“When people mention these things, I don’t like to talk about itbecause the people who are in the film are the right ones and the circumstances of life happen as they have to happen. But yes, I turned down the role,” said Kate Hudson.

The Hollywood star also admitted that, looking back, he wonders how his professional life would have changed if he had accepted the character. “Now that I think about it, it’s one of those things where I say: ‘It would have been nice to be in a movie Spider-Man”.

Hudson explained that he opted for a role in Four Featherswhich allowed him to work alongside Heath Ledgerwho became a close friend. “I had to do Four Feathers y Thanks to that I met Heath Ledgerwho became a great friend,” the artist recalled.

Hudson stressed the value of that personal and professional experience and stressed that he had an experience that he would never have had. So, while she acknowledges that it would have been fun to be Mary Jane, she is grateful for the path she chose.

The actress herself maintains that part of her feels that life happens exactly as it should, highlighting the importance of accepting how each decision sets a course.

After Hudson’s decision, the role of Mary Jane Watson was in the hands of Kirsten Dunst, who shared the spotlight with Tobey Maguire under the direction of Sam Raimi. Dunst participated in the three films of the saga, which grossed USD 826 million and consolidated the success of superhero movies.

In a 2021 interview, Dunst expressed his willingness to return to the character and said: “I would do it. Why not? It would be fun.” Since the last installment of the trilogy, Dunst has not played Mary Jane again. Maguire, for his part, concluded his time as Peter Parker in 2007 and then had an additional collaboration in the Marvel universe.

Four Feathersreleased a few months after Spider-Manfeatured a cast made up of Hudson, Heath Ledger, Djimon Hounsou and Wes Bentley. The film raised USD 29 million at the box office, without reaching its budget of USD 35 millionand received mixed reviews.

Hudson, however, highlighted the experience and bond of friendship with Ledger as one of the most valuable results of filming.
