Stories about relationships have always provided fertile material for horror cinema. The fear of abandonment, stagnation or total surrender is often the basis of narratives that explore intimate vulnerabilities and transform affections into risk. In Together (Together2025), directed by Michael Shanks and starring the couple Dave Franco e Alison Briethis logic emerges as the central axis of a plot that mixes body horror, emotional crisis and allegories about emotional dependence. The film uses the codes of the genre to investigate what happens when an apparently stable couple begins to fall out of alignment — and how this rupture can take on darker tones than expected.

The terror that turns relationships into survival: The plot of Together (2025)

The story follows Tim and Millietogether for years and about to face an important change: leaving the city to live in the countryside, where Millie got a new job. Tim, a musician still looking for stability, tries to adapt to the transition, even though he has doubts about his career, routine and future. Shanks quickly establishes the dynamic between them, highlighting the weight that change places on their relationship. Tim’s lack of direction — literally and figuratively — already reveals a latent tension: he depends on his partner to get around, to reorganize his routine and, in a certain way, to move forward.

During a going-away party, Millie proposes to Tim. His hesitation, witnessed by everyone, shows that something is not right. Even so, the couple insists on the promise that everything can get better. The film invests in this emotional turning point to take the viewer into the territory of horror, which manifests itself from the moment they discover something strange on the ceiling of the new house and, shortly after, they find a mysterious cave during a trail in the region.

The accidental fall into the cave, accompanied by a climate that refers to the biological design of productions such as Alientriggers physical and behavioral transformations, especially in Tim. Violent episodes, convulsions and unexpected bodily changes begin to mark the couple’s daily life. Their intimacy is also affected, leading to scenes that explore body horror as a metaphor for desire, repulsion and emotional fusion.

Shanks builds this process gradually, focusing on the increasing tension and physicality of the performances. Franco and Brie deliver work that requires physical effort and dramatic precision, as much of the horror depends on the transformation of bodies. The director uses practical and digital effects to create images that refer to David Cronenberg’s cinema and the universe of The Enigma of Another Worldby John Carpenter, creating moments of visual impact.

The cast is completed with Damon Herrimanwho plays Jamie, Millie’s colleague and the couple’s neighbor. His presence works as a counterpoint to the deterioration of Tim and Millie’s relationship, adding layers of doubt, care and suspicion to the surroundings.

Without revealing the main events, Together is a film that explores horror based on the idea that long relationships can hide deep fissures. As the couple faces inexplicable events, a reflection arises on where the limit goes between dependence, sacrifice and transformation. In the end, the work functions as a study in the collapse and reconstruction possible when two individuals try to remain united in the midst of chaos — literal and emotional.
