In the plot of Elsa & Fred: a love of passion, Elsa (Shirley Maclaine) is an elderly woman who lives alone. One day, she makes a barbering while driving and ends up breaking the headlights of the car Lydia (Marcia Gay Harden), the daughter of her new neighbor, Fred (Christopher Plummer). Outraged by what happened, Lydia demands that Elsa arches the repair.
Elsa’s son agrees to pay for the damage, but by delivering the check to Fred, the elderly manages to convince him to refuse the money by sharing a moving story.

Over time, Elsa and Fred get closer and closer, despite the opposite personalities: she is outgoing and full of life while he is grumpy and prefers the tranquility of the home.
Remake of a success
The movie of the afternoon session today is, in fact, a remake of a Hispanic-argent production of 2005 with the same name: Elsa & Fred – A Love of Passion. At the time, the feature was a great box office hit in Argentina.
However, Christopher Plummer does not like to define the work as a remake, nor the word itself. According to the actor, “Shirley, Michael and I rewrite him completely. So, I prefer to think about it as an English version”. Hey?
Farewell of a Star
The film was the last appearance of George Segal, interpreter of Johnin theaters. However, the actor continued to act in The Goldbergs series until his death. Segal passed away on March 23, 2021, at the age of 87, due to complications of saphenous bridge surgery.
Reference to a classic
The scene where Shirley Maclaine and Christopher Plummer enter Fontana Di Trevi in Rome, was filmed in black and white as a tribute to the famous sequence of the classic The Sweet Life (1960), in which Marcello Mastroianni and Anita Ekberg bathe in the same place.
